Interpersonal Communication
$224
Communicating successfully depends on effective use of communication strategies and behaviours. Words, facial and body movements, tone of voice, even clothing and situation, all form an intricate symbol system that must be quickly translated by those who want to communicate. It has been said that there is no communication unless a mutual sharing of meaning takes place. It has also been said that one cannot NOT communicate. These two ideas seem to oppose one another, but they are two sides of the same coin. A smile can have many meanings. And so can silence. This course will show you how to manage the conscious and unconscious codes of meaning we send to each other and to respond with appropriate codes in turn. This course explains and explores concepts of verbal and nonverbal expression including personal style, listening, relationship dynamics, self-esteem, conflict management, and cultural and gender communication differences. Examples, graphics, and theoretical models help clarify communication topics and simplify the process for effective communication in family, personal, and professional situations.Communicating is necessary. Knowing how to do it well is personally satisfying and professionally wise

Fungamentals 1: The Basics of Tree and Fungi Interactions
$165
In the urban environment trees and fungi are inseparable. The role fungi play in keeping trees alive, and on the other hand shortening their life, is not only critical to arborists and clients, but also those of us who maintain and build landscapes around these trees.
As professionals, we can bring this world to life for our clients, protect their assets from needless damage during construction, and bring immense value through deeper understanding.
This seminar will cover ID skills for decay fungi, introduce ecology of mycorrhizal fungi, fungal pathogens and how cankers form, techniques for preventing the effects of harmful fungi during and after construction, as well as management techniques for both young and old trees that play host to cankers and other common fungi.
Participants will leave with confidence in field ID, explaining fungal pathology to clients, and understanding the cost management and prevention of issues.

Our Host
In early 2020, Sabina Barrett and Byron Carroll purchased the McKinney House property, unaware of its historical significance or long-standing reputation as a local landmark. Byron is an Ironworker and Welder with experience in masonry and carpentry, while Sabina has a background in architecture and works as a Conservation Technologist and Heritage Planner. The mid-19th-century stone house was built by blacksmith William McKinney along the former stagecoach route between Bytown and Kingston, establishing the property as an early hub of rural industry and travel. One of its defining features was the stone wall at the front of the property, later moved during the 1950s highway expansion and now significantly deteriorated. They are committed to restoring the property with care, beginning with rebuilding the stone wall as close to its original location as possible, preserving a character-defining feature that has framed the landmark for over 165 years.
