Working at Heights - Fundamentals of Fall Prevention

Infrastructure Health & Safety Association
Please refer to your IHSA booking confirmation.

This course provides workers with the basic fall prevention information they require to work safely in areas where they may be exposed to fall hazards. Participants receive the most up-to-date information with hands-on instruction from industry experts and trained adult educators who are experienced in working at heights.

This is required training for workers on construction projects who may use a method of fall protection (O. Reg. 297/13, s. 7). While a classroom-based Working at Heights course is a great starting point, site-specific training is also required. After the in-class session, the employer must train workers on the specific hazards faced and types of equipment used on the job.

IHSA will issue a temporary certificate of completion to successful participants. A permanent certificate of completion will be issued by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development.

Each participant must provide a phone number and email address to register the record of training with the MLITSD and should have completed Basic Occupational Health and Safety Awareness training under Reg. 297/13.

A Working at Heights - Refresher course must be taken every three years to maintain certification.

What to do With a Downpour: Ornamental Ways to Handle Rainwater

Urban development has resulted in large areas of impermeable surfaces. This leads to poor water quality and erosion as well as drying of the creeks during droughts.
Techniques will be discussed to aid in infiltrating rainwater into the soil while beautifying your landscapes and allowing a more unusual palette of plants to be used.
Rain gardens can be a beautiful addition to any yard and can allow the planting of some truly interesting plants. They also help the environment by infiltrating water to clean it and restore the water table and base-flow (the water that seeps through the ground to our creeks).
We’ll cover how to design and build a rain garden, including placement, construction, and plant choices. Best of all, many municipalities and regions offer funding for projects like this!

BEFORE REGISTERING
Please refer to the Technician Conditions at the following link: https://www.ontariopesticide.com/technician/technician-conditions/

Become a Technician
A technician is indirectly supervised by a licensed land, water or structural exterminator based upon at least a once per week site visit. Unlicensed assistants, working without onsite direct supervision will have to successfully complete a training program which includes taking a MECP approved pesticide safety course and practical training from a licensed exterminator to become a technician. Technicians can apply pesticides with specific restrictions of duties under the supervision of a licensed exterminator, who must visit at least once a week to observe the application. Unlicensed assistants who have not completed the training to become technicians must be directly supervised by a licensed exterminator at all times and are known as trainees.

You are required to successfully complete two parts of pesticide safety training:

Step 1: Academic Course Requirements - (home study and closed book examination)
-Apply to Ontario Pesticide Training & Certification, University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus. You must send your payment of $115, payable to the University of Guelph, with the application.
-Study all of the "Core Manual" which will be sent to you, and prepare to write the qualifying examination. You must write the Core Manual Examination within 12 months of your date of application. During this time you are considered a trainee.
-Write the examination. You must write and successfully complete the Core Manual Examination with a mark of 75% or greater. You will then receive a Technician Identification Card signed by an official of Ridgetown Campus.
-Return the "Application for Pesticide Technician" with payment of $44 if you would like to become a Technician. This must be done within 30 days of exam date.
-After your exam session if it is suspected that there was an attempt to cheat on your OPTC exam, your OPTC exam results will be withheld. After investigation, you may be charged with academic misconduct which could result in a forfeit of your OPTC application and a report being sent to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

Academic misconduct includes copying another person’s answers, collaborating with someone else to give/receive answers, or using unauthorized aids (written or electronic).

Please Note: The Core Manual is the same manual candidates use for Exterminator Licence Certification. Once you successfully complete the Core Manual Examination, you are half way to earning your exterminator certification. At any time during the next 12 months, you can work towards obtaining your exterminator certification through Ontario Pesticide Training & Certification. Call 1-888-620-9999 for more information.

Step 2: Practical Training Requirements

Have a licensed exterminator evaluate your practical training. This is outlined on the Practical Pesticide Safety Training Document, Part 1, which will be sent to you with your Technician Identification Card.
When you successfully complete the practical training, the licensed exterminator will sign, date and list his / her licence number on your Technician Identification Card.
Fax, mail or scan and email a copy of your signed Technician Identification Card to the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus within 5 working days to officially register as a Technician.
Do not send the original card - you must keep it with you when you are working.

Renewal Requirements
You must renew your technician status every two years by once again successfully completing the academic and practical training requirements.

Successfully complete the exam with a pass mark of 75% or greater on both parts of the exam. You will then receive a letter of certification; you must send a copy of this letter to the MInistry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) when you apply for a Pesticide Exterminator Licence.
If you fail on your first attempt, you have one year to rewrite the exam. You are allowed a maximum of two more attempts during the 12 months, with no more than two attempts in any six month period. The exam rewrite fee for failures is $82.00.

You must apply to the MInistry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for your Pesticide Exterminator Licence within one year of obtaining certification. The licence fee is $90 for five years.

After your exam session if it is suspected that there was an attempt to cheat on your OPTC exam, your OPTC exam results will be withheld. After investigation, you may be charged with academic misconduct which could result in a forfeit of your OPTC application and a report being sent to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

Life-Magnet: Creating a Layered Native Garden for Biodiversity

Landscape Ontario
1 day (6.5 hrs)
Online
Default
$290
Members

$165

With the expanding trend toward landscaping to enhance all forms of life, the question becomes… ‘how’. Different species prefer different layers in the landscape canopy. For example, some birds and insects hang out in the upper canopy; others, on the ground, and others, anywhere in between. Having a landscape with trees, under storey trees, shrubs, perennials and leaf litter ensures a home for everyone. Thus biodiversity is enhanced. Also, by choosing plants favouring native species, and creating layers including varying heights of plants, focusing on what food and habitat niches those plants would fill, the life cycles of many species can be supported. This involves looking at all life stages: from birth (larva and eggs) to adulthood; and from first food sources to berries and insects. Also worth considering is where creatures need shelter; old logs, standing trees, twiggy shrubs for nesting, and more.
We’ll delve into recommended plant choices, design considerations, the ‘native vs. non’ issue, and finer details such as supporting obligat feeders (those that can feed on only one genus or species).

Design Matters - Landscape Architecture Through Storytelling & Empathy
What does it mean to design with story? In this session, Desirée Theriault explores how storytelling emerges from the land and how empathy can guide the way we shape spaces. Drawing on her work with MMIWG2S memorials, Residential School Survivor memorial projects, and community medicine gardens, she will share approaches to making space for stories in landscape architecture, where design becomes a tool for healing, connection, and truth-telling.

AI & Landscape Design: Innovating Workflows, Inspiring Results - Frank Bourque
In this 60-minute session, participants will:
-Understand the future of AI in design: Explore how AI tools are reshaping design creativity, visualization, and collaboration in landscaping.
-See real-world applications: Learn how AI can assist in 3D modeling, rapid concept generation, plant selection, material blending, and client presentation.
-Discover business advantages: Understand how AI can help streamline communication, reduce design time, automate repetitive tasks, and improve project accuracy.
-Gain practical resources: Walk away with examples of AI platforms, software integrations, and strategies tailored for designers.
Key Learning Outcomes
-How AI can enhance - not replace - the creative role of the landscape designer.
-Practical tools and software to implement today to save time and deliver efficient and higher-value designs.
-How to use AI to communicate design concepts more effectively to clients and teams.
-Future trends in AI technology and what designers must know to stay ahead.

Designing with Confidence: A Collaborative Conceptual Design Charette
Led by seasoned Landscape Designer Beth Edney CLD and Landscape Architect Paul Brydges OALA,CLD
Join us for this round table, hands-on collaboration with fellow Landscape Designers in a dynamic, supportive environment. This interactive workshop is designed to guide you through the process of creating a conceptual design that is not only practical, and functional, but also prepares you to confidently develop your own drawings for clients and build a strong submission for your CLD (Certified Landscape Designer) portfolio. Beth and Paul will lead this session through key steps in design development, offering valuable insights and expert guidance to help you grow your skills and deepen your understanding of the process. Whether you're just beginning your journey toward certification or are a seasoned professional, this session will provide inspiration, great takeaways and will be a confidence builder to take your designs to the next level.

Finding Design Inspiration that Lasts a Lifetime - Dr.Ron Koudys
Have you ever found yourself staring at a blank, white page, wishing for inspiration to strike? You're likely curious about how other landscape designers come up with their creative and unique ideas. We all share that curiosity!

Changing the Grade: Retaining Walls - Adele Pierre
As we shift to smaller lot sizes with larger homes, it has become a function of landscape design to create level outdoor spaces. Adjusting the grades of the site often requires constructing retaining walls. By raising or lowering ground levels, designers can create appealing outdoor spaces that enhance both the aesthetic appeal and practicality of these areas, turning them into welcoming spaces for relaxation and socializing. Unfortunately, many site plans appear with the note beside the retaining wall…“To be Designed by Others.”

Rural Design Crash Course - Drainage, Septic Systems & Landscaping, Oh My! - Michelle Dada
For rural landscaping projects, it is important to consider infrastructure on the property as part of any holistic landscape design. Drainage and environmental features are important to consider, along with private onsite services such as wells and septic systems, when considering landscaping projects in rural areas. Increasing requirements for design approvals and processes have necessitated additional design and planning in recent years.
